Changes in Recruitment for 2025

NHS England has announced that all applications to England’s Specialised Foundation Programme (SFP) will be integrated into the main Foundation School allocation process starting with the 2025 recruitment cycle.
This change addresses concerns about the fairness and consistency of some recruitment and selection processes, as well as the lack of local resources to support SFP recruitment and interviews.
This adjustment aims to create a more equitable and uniform recruitment approach, aligning the process in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Notably, this procedure is already established in Wales.
The SFP allows foundation doctors to enhance their skills in research, teaching, and leadership/management, alongside the competencies specified in the Foundation Programme Curriculum. It is a highly sought-after and competitive programme, with increasing applicant numbers each year.
A recent review underscored the necessity for these changes to ensure equal opportunities for all applicants vying for a place in the SFP.
Professor Elizabeth Hughes, Medical Director of NHS England, commented: “We are committed to improving our recruitment processes whenever possible to benefit applicants. Standardizing the approach across all regions will enhance consistency. We aim to expand access to training in research, leadership, and education, and we believe these changes will provide more opportunities for Foundation doctors to develop these crucial skills.”
